If you want to securely tie down an object - whether it's a boat on a trailer, luggage on a car roof rack or a dinghy on the deck of a yacht - you will usually attach ropes to one side of the object, pass them over the object and tie them down on the other side. But you have to get tension on the ropes. The lashing knot is suitable for this purpose and can even replace a lashing strap.
